Blog #5

The captain, Remy and Lionel thinks taking Amanda away from Helene is actually the best thing to do, because she was a drug addict and never really cared about her daughter. For example in the movie when they were investigating about the case they discovered that, Helene would leave Amanda in the house or in some place to go off to take care of her business which is sniffing drugs into her skull and prostituting her body for money. Also, Lionel reacted towards what he heard Helene was arguing with another guy about taking the money and leave the state, while he was in the back room with Amanda and called Remy to help. From there, they made up a plan to bring up a story so that they could save Amanda from all the chaos of his sister. Which Angie agreed when she saw Amanda’s face and all the contentment she had with her new family.

Therefore, Patrick who kind of promised Helene, that he would do everything he could to find her daughter. At the end of the movie, after finding another boy’s body in a house, he’s instinct told him that the story of Amanda’s death wasn’t clear enough to believe. Then he decided to go over the captain’s condo after speaking to Remy at a bar and found Amanda. Coming to a conclusion of bringing her back to her mother even though his girlfriend, and the captain tried to make him see the whole point of kidnapping Amanda in the first place. But Patrick’s theory was that the whole idea was wrong to commit and the right thing to do is giving Helene her daughter back, because she’s her mother and might even change some day

In my opinion, I think the movie is mostly based on Moral Absolute because at the end, Patrick brought back Amanda to her mother. Although, he thinks his decision might be the worst but he did what the law would have said, he kept his words and followed the rule as written. Because it doesn’t matter how you kidnap or murder a person it’s still wrong to do. There isn’t a clean or perfect way to kill as long as it taking a life that isn’t yours it’s stays killing wrongly.
