BLOG 7: Revision of CATW PRACTICE 3

Music cannot simply be there for amusement but also can be used to heal. According to “Is Music a Good Tool for Health”, Elizabeth Scott, stated that music affects the body and the mind. In fact, researchers recently found that music can be used in a strongly way to help patients with pain management, to help them and to ease up their muscle tensions. Therefore, it doesn’t only help them to relax meaning music therapy can create a way to prevent damages that can cause chronic stress, and bring a more positive state of mind in which I strongly agree with the idea that music has a big role in people’s behavior when it comes to emotions and reactions.

Moreover, from a TV show that I have watched in the summer called “Switched at Birth,” there was two girls that were switched together then later on reunited. But one of them who were living a bit different from the other, the environment was very low and caused her to develop an ear disease that caused her to lose her sense of hearing even though she could read lips. Referring to a part of the episodes, that showed us she was actually upset with her mother and suddenly ran to her room then took her IPod started listening to music and kept on moving her body with the beat of the song and all. But then I questioned myself, what in the world was she listening to? And then, the other girl asked her what she was listening to because she was deaf. That was when she replied and said “she couldn’t hear the lyrics, but she could hear the beats” and that she had learned a technique in deaf school. The program had created a way for them to calm their emotions and anger, because mostly individuals that are deaf intend to have an extremely high temper in which they cannot control. From getting that upset, they can start breaking things and even cause them to have brain damage. Then I realized a person doesn’t have to own all five senses to hear and enjoy music and from listening to the beats, she was eventually calmed and ready to speak.

Another example is from my own typical experience, because I remember this time, I was actually thinking of my mother who is living in Haiti apart from me. My father who doesn’t like the idea of me talking to her on the phone the way I do, because I could speak to her for hours and never get tired. Therefore, I think of her very often and cry most of the time because I miss her deeply. My father would come at me and started yelling, and speak in a way a father shouldn’t have. He would curse over and over till I scream and burst into tears. And my only refugee of not being able to respond was my music, I would listen to the music for hours till I fall asleep. It helped me to think more of what has to come out of my mouth. it allowed me to imagine myself standing next to my mother and block every single problem I had at the moment. Sometimes the music would bring me in a special place where I could see nothing but an empty space all to me, no one’s voice was allowed in to that special place. The music would help me hide into my shell and think of nothing and write poems about what I felt, and I saw. I would fall with the rhythm of the beat with my eyes close nothing but my thoughts and the love I had for my mother. It would calm my anger of cursing at him back. From listening to slow songs then I would feel better and love my mother twice as much.

In addition, music is there not only for personal consequences, but it is there and used to cure mental problems and emotional regards and basically a benefit to your health and more.

Blog 6: Personal Directions for The CATW

1

To prepare myself on the day of the CATW test, first I will definitely eat a solid breakfast, drink a lot of water and also keep another bottle in my bag, then start timing myself with how I need to separate my notes and my practice tests so I can revise each and every single one of them. I will look through each of my practice tests as many times as I can for a whole 20 minutes of my time while I’m still home. And keep everything organize so that I can take another look at them on the Bus and the Train. I will revise the structures of the test, the exercises I did in class to plot the writing exam. And from there I believe that I will be more familiar with the steps needed and how to start.

When I get to take the test I will read the article once, re-read for a second time, I will underline words that are unfamiliar to me, I will read attentively and look for the main idea of the article. I will watch for what are the supporting details and recognize the minor and major details. I will start brainstorming those ideas into pieces so I can have a clearer sense of the text. Because I took all my time to revise my tests and see where I was weak and strong, how much grammar fixing I needed, how often the teacher found my sentences to be unclear and how many mistakes I had in punctuation. Then I will create a much better way to start writing and to make it easier to understand and to read.

I will choose an introductory sentence, publication meaning I need to include, the tittle, the author’s name if given and I need to state the summary of the article then I need to choose a specific supporting detail to either agree or disagree with in the article and that would be my thesis. And from what I had chosen during my brainstorm and according to that specific detail I chose in my thesis, I will start to think of the information, the example that I need to support my thesis according to my opinion of the text. I will need two strong enough paragraphs it can be from my own experience, TV shows, or a historical event as long as it supports my thesis and also have good examples in detail.

2

-Run-on sentences. –Punctuation. –Spelling. –Grammar. –Timing.

3

I need to know how to start and where to stop. I need to pay attention to what I’m reading and what it’s all about before I start to write. I need to check my writing, spelling before I hand it in, I need to think about my run-on sentences therefore, I need to think of when to put a period and shorten my sentences a bit less. I have to bring my dictionary and look more carefully of the words. I need to develop my paragraphs and use more detail and examples. I need to take my time instead of rushing the tests to finish early, I need to take a very long deep breath before I start and clear my mind then stop thinking of the test a little less.

Blog #5

The captain, Remy and Lionel thinks taking Amanda away from Helene is actually the best thing to do, because she was a drug addict and never really cared about her daughter. For example in the movie when they were investigating about the case they discovered that, Helene would leave Amanda in the house or in some place to go off to take care of her business which is sniffing drugs into her skull and prostituting her body for money. Also, Lionel reacted towards what he heard Helene was arguing with another guy about taking the money and leave the state, while he was in the back room with Amanda and called Remy to help. From there, they made up a plan to bring up a story so that they could save Amanda from all the chaos of his sister. Which Angie agreed when she saw Amanda’s face and all the contentment she had with her new family.

Therefore, Patrick who kind of promised Helene, that he would do everything he could to find her daughter. At the end of the movie, after finding another boy’s body in a house, he’s instinct told him that the story of Amanda’s death wasn’t clear enough to believe. Then he decided to go over the captain’s condo after speaking to Remy at a bar and found Amanda. Coming to a conclusion of bringing her back to her mother even though his girlfriend, and the captain tried to make him see the whole point of kidnapping Amanda in the first place. But Patrick’s theory was that the whole idea was wrong to commit and the right thing to do is giving Helene her daughter back, because she’s her mother and might even change some day

In my opinion, I think the movie is mostly based on Moral Absolute because at the end, Patrick brought back Amanda to her mother. Although, he thinks his decision might be the worst but he did what the law would have said, he kept his words and followed the rule as written. Because it doesn’t matter how you kidnap or murder a person it’s still wrong to do. There isn’t a clean or perfect way to kill as long as it taking a life that isn’t yours it’s stays killing wrongly.
